Textiles in Sports by EuraMaterials

From Olympia to Paris 2024, sport has always existed throughout history, in various forms, everywhere. Sports are a key component of globalization: organizations, global events, brands, and high-performance gear.
More than 8 in 10 French people (84%) say they participate in sports. 54% of them wear sportswear even when not engaging in any sporting activity.

The sports apparel market is therefore a very dynamic sector (accounting for 40% of the entire French textile industry). Source https://www.economie.gouv.fr/dgccrf/vetements-sport-toujours-plus-dinnovations

Sports apparel has evolved to offer a combination of comfort, performance, and safety tailored to athletes’ needs.
In terms of comfort, these garments are characterized by optimal moisture management thanks to specialized knits that ensure rapid moisture transfer, creating a “second-skin” feel.
The fabrics are also designed to be breathable and quickly wick away sweat, while incorporating hollow fibers and hydrophobic microporous membranes to ensure better evaporation.
In terms of performance, certain materials are specifically developed to maximize athletic efficiency, such as “shark skin” wetsuits, although these have been banned in competition since 2010. Innovations such as phase-change materials and aligned fabrics help improve aerodynamics and movement.
Finally, safety is also a key factor, with UV-protective and antibacterial technologies, as well as textiles that are resistant to punctures and cuts, while also being durable against abrasion and impact.
These garments, combining comfort, performance, and safety, are therefore essential for enhancing athletes’ capabilities while ensuring their well-being and protection.

The sports apparel sector benefits from numerous events and trade shows that allow professionals to network and discover the latest innovations.
Among the leading events are ISPO, Performance Days, and METS Amsterdam—essential platforms where manufacturers, designers, and distributors meet to explore new trends and textile technologies.
Furthermore, key players in the sector play an essential role in the production and innovation chain.
Companies such as Alpex, Concordia, Cousin Trestec, Damart, and Fendertex stand out for their expertise and ability to offer technical and high-performance solutions.
Others, such as Sonatex, Safilin, and Juin Fait Le Lin, contribute to the diversification of materials, while Ennait and Sagaret bring innovations focused on sustainability and environmental responsibility.
These players form a dynamic and constantly evolving network, ready to meet the challenges of modern sports textiles.
